The History
The Sherman was built in 1888 by the Sherman-Hoar family. The historical resonance of this house is far reaching.
Roger Sherman is the only person to have signed all four of the great state papers of the United States: the Continental Association, the Articles of Confederation, the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution. His grandson, Sherman Hoar, a member of congress and U.S. District Attorney, built this house in 1888 and lived here with his family.
The Sherman-Hoar family was deeply connected with the leaders of the educational, social, political, and literary revolutions of the early days of our republic, including Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Horace Mann, and Margaret Fuller.
